Show Highlights
- In these new “Back To Basic” episodes, Devin starts each show by asking an all-important question, “How are we going to help our dog lovers today?”
- During casual conversation, Bennie talks about the first Postulate he created in training: Structure is Rules.
- Bennie also explores the basics of the rules by explaining “everybody wants to want to.”
- Setting rules is very important, yet if you don’t KEEP the rules, then how can you expect your DOG to keep the rules?
- An example of how one of Bennie’s client dogs made a decision on whether or not to go under the couch and the process the dog went through.
- In the Main Topic, Bennie breaks down Postulate #1 Structure is Rules into three parts:
- Creating: set the rule and be specific with that rule
- Abiding: say something once then set the expectation
- Consistency: do the same things every time, and expect the same results every time
- The challenge is to catch yourself in the moment. Are you really being consistent? Are you keeping your rule?
- To reinforce the rule, you have to do the same thing every time, and you have to do it over and over and over again.
- If the results you want are inconsistent, then it’s because you are not expecting the same results.
- It comes down to this: “Are you aware that you are NOT being consistent?”
- Dogs have rules too. There are certain things your dog does on a consistent basis that YOU respond to the same way, each and every time.
