Green Discover Your Dog

Timing is everything! You have a very narrow window to correct your dog when it does something wrong.

Today, discover why you must catch your dog in the act if you hope to correct the behavior.

In this episode, you’ll learn how and why to pardon those doggie crimes that you didn’t witness.

Show Highlights

  • Because dogs are reactive and humans are analytical, you think your dog should understand things well after the behavior was committed.
  • Since a dog is reactive, YOU have to be reactive and this means catching your dog in the act or just let it go.
  • Postulate: To correct your dog well after a behavior or away from the location of the infraction makes no sense to your dog.
  • Corrections have to be in the moment.
  • Your dog’s attention span is only about 5 seconds long. Because of this you have a very short time to react to your dogs behavior.
  • When you see that “Look” as if your dog is guilty, she is really trying to figure out what is going on in the moment.
  • Even negative attention can be seen as something that reinforces (rewards) certain behaviors.
  • Devin gives an example of what people and dogs do to get attention, both positive and negative.
  • Bennie uses a personal example to teach you how to respond in those OMG moments with your dog.

Homework

  • An exercise designed to teach you how to catch yourself in that OMG moment with your dog.
